Safe Zones for TikTok, Reels and Shorts: Keep Captions Visible

Every short-form app covers part of your video with its own buttons and text. Here is where captions are safe, and how to check before you post.

A safe zone is the part of a vertical video that the app's own interface does not cover. TikTok, Instagram Reels, Facebook Reels and YouTube Shorts all lay buttons, your username, the post caption and a progress bar over the edges of your video, especially on the right side and along the bottom. Captions placed there can be hidden. Keep them in the middle area and check each platform before you post.

What covers your video

  • Right edge: like, comment, share and profile buttons.
  • Bottom: your username, the post caption, music or audio info, and the progress bar.
  • Top: tabs, search and status bars on some apps.

Why each platform is different

Each app lays out its interface its own way, and changes it over time. Captions that are safe on one can sit under the buttons on another, which matters if you post the same video everywhere.

Practical rules

  • Keep captions a little above the vertical center, clear of the bottom fifth of the frame.
  • Leave a margin on the right for the button column.
  • Bigger captions need more checking: they reach the edges sooner.
  • If you post everywhere, check against every platform you post to, not just one.

Checking safe zones in Captixa

  1. Under the preview, turn on the safe-zone overlay.
  2. Choose the platform: TikTok, Instagram Reels, Facebook Reels or YouTube Shorts, or the 10% title-safe area.
  3. Click Move captions into safe area. Captixa also warns you when captions overlap the platform's interface.

Because platforms change their layouts between app releases, it is still worth a quick look on your phone after you post.

Are the safe zones the same on every app?

No. TikTok, Instagram Reels, Facebook Reels and YouTube Shorts all place their buttons and text differently, which is why it helps to check each one.

Do safe zones change?

Yes. Platforms move their interface between app releases, so treat any safe-zone overlay as a guide, not a guarantee.

Where is the safest place for captions?

Usually a little above the vertical middle of the frame, away from the right edge. The bottom of the frame is where most apps put their text.
